Developed in the US in the 1930's with the original purpose of building railroad coal wagons, Corten steel is a group of high-strength steel alloys that were designed to eliminate the need for painting when used in outdoor environments. They will instead develop a beautiful rusted surface within approx. six months of being exposed to the elements. As a result, by the 1960's Corten Steel found itself being widely employed in construction and also prominently used to create fabulous garden art.

But this surface corrosion doesn't just look good, it gives Corten steel an advantage over regular carbon steel. It creates a protective oxide coating on the surface of the metal, slowing down future corrosion and giving you a product that will last!
